What happens if your roof is leaking in Monmouth County?

Monmouth County roof replacement
A leaking roof can really turn a day sour and add stress to life. Nobody likes dealing with a leaking roof but many people wonder what exactly happened if your roof is leaking? Do you need to fix the problem right away or can you wait? For most homes across the country asphalt shingles are used as the main type of roofing material, these shingles can wear out overtime and expose the home to the elements. A leaky roof overtime can be a big problem since it allows for water to get inside the attic and home, this can weaken the OSB boards and other supports which hold up the roof. Even the smallest leak in the roof can cause water damage and overtime cause severe structural damage if not addressed properly and quickly. For any questions we cannot answer in this article be sure to contact our Monmouth County roofers, they can help answer anything you need related to roofing.

Like mentioned in the paragraph above, once water enters the attic and rafters it can cause mold and water damage throughout the home. Water can damage drywall, insulation and cause harmful mold inside the HVAC systems if not repaired soon after the leak begins. If your home has been leaking for a few days then you will most likely hear a dripping noise somewhere in the home or begin to see brown spots on the ceiling. This means that water has begun to build above the drywall and pooled. If you have noticed this brown ring then you need to relieve the pressure so the water can drain properly and not cause any more water damage.

Relieve pressure
Pooled water on a ceiling can cause the drywall to become heavy, while this will not make your entire ceiling collapse it does weaken it. In severe cases we have seen some ceiling sections crumble since the integrity of the material was compromised due to the water leak. When you notice the stain on the ceiling the very first step you need to do is poke a hole in the spot where the water is getting trapped. Almost all of the time you will want to poke a hole directly in the middle of the brown circle since this is where the leak will be dripping from most of the time. Be prepared to have a bucket under the poked hole since there is a high probability that water will begin to come out of the home. Poking the hole in the ceiling will prevent the already trapped water from spreading across the ceiling and causing more damages. Once you have the hole poked and water is draining you will need to go into the attic to begin inspecting for the source of the leak. For those that do not want to go into the attic or on the roof be sure to call our roofing contractors in Monmouth County so they can come help take a look.
